Most guides to Orange County in August treat the season like one long, uniform stretch of fairs, festivals, and beach nights that all run together until Labor Day. That is not how this summer actually works. Right now, in the second week of August, the county's biggest traditions are stacked on top of each other for what amounts to one narrow window, and by the time you read this, some of them have already started closing. The OC Fair shuts its gates for the year on August 16. Several city concert series wrapped up days ago. The Sawdust Art Festival keeps going for three more weeks after the Fair leaves town. Understanding which pieces are closing and which ones outlast the others is the difference between a weekend that hits three things at once and one that misses everything because you assumed you had until September.
The Fair Closes August 16, Whether or Not You've Been
The 2026 OC Fair runs 23 days, from July 17 through August 16, under the theme "Your Adventure Awaits," and it closes on Mondays and Tuesdays throughout its run. That means from today, there are exactly two more weekends left, and the fairgrounds are dark on the two weekdays in between.
What's changed this year is worth knowing if you haven't been in a while. Starting in 2026, daily attendance at the OC Fair is capped at 55,000 people, a limit the fair didn't previously enforce this strictly, and tickets must be purchased in advance rather than at the gate. If you're planning to go on a Friday or Saturday night in this final stretch, that cap is the reason those days sell out before you get there, not just heavier foot traffic.
The entertainment lineup during these last two weeks spans Pacific Amphitheatre headliners alongside tribute acts at The Hangar and motorsports at the Action Sports Arena, and Fair After Dark runs a different theme on the Plaza Stage every night, from swing on Saturdays to Latin night on Sundays. None of that carries over once the gates close on the 16th. There's no extension, no encore weekend. When the Fair ends, the carnival rides, the livestock exhibits, and the fried-food vendors leave the county's calendar entirely until next July.
Sawdust Turns 60 and Outlasts the Fair by Three Weeks
While the Fair is counting down, the Sawdust Art Festival in Laguna Canyon is only about halfway through its run. This is the festival's 60th season, and it continues through September 6, roughly three weeks after the OC Fair packs up. The two events share a summer but not a closing date, and that gap matters if you're trying to decide which weekend to commit to which.
Sawdust is a different kind of gathering than the Fair. It's non-juried, and every exhibiting artist during the summer festival is required to be a Laguna Beach resident, which is part of what gives the eucalyptus-lined paths their handmade, unhurried feel rather than a traveling-show atmosphere. The festival describes itself as the "beating heart of Laguna Beach's creative spirit," and this year's food lineup backs that up with names worth knowing before you go: The Cove by Starfish is serving a churro bao bun that's become a festival signature, AhbA is a new addition doing elevated American fare and burgers, and Taco Loco, run by longtime local favorite Gonzo Rebollar, is back with the same bold flavors regulars expect.
If your plan was to hit Sawdust and the Fair on the same trip, this week and next are your last chance to do both without a return visit. After August 16, it's Sawdust alone, plus whatever's left of the Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters, which runs July 3 through August 30 in the same canyon.
The Concert Series Aren't Closing on the Same Day Either
Summer concerts in the park across Orange County don't run on a single countywide calendar, and that's easy to miss if you assume every city's series ends around Labor Day. Some already wrapped before this week started. Others have one or two dates left. A few run into the last week of August.

That table isn't a comprehensive list of every series in the county, but it makes the point. If you were planning to catch a free outdoor concert before summer's out, the window is closing city by city rather than all at once, and a couple of these have already shut for the year. Newport Beach's Symphony in the Cities show tomorrow evening at the Civic Center is one of the last of these to go before the Fair itself closes the following weekend.
Fill the Gaps Between Stops With What's New
If you're stringing together a Fair visit, a Sawdust afternoon, and one of the last concerts into a single stretch of weekends, the restaurant scene has shifted enough this year that it's worth building meals around rather than defaulting to the same places you always go.
Costa Mesa has picked up Pasta Sisters, where the Da Re family, known for their Los Angeles locations, brought hand-rolled pasta and slow-simmered sauces to a new dining room. Laguna Beach's dining scene has a new Italian-inspired arrival in Piatti's, which pairs seaside views with coastal Mediterranean cooking, including grilled branzino and wood-fired pizza. Dumpling House regulars now have Seven Folding Dumpling House to add to the rotation, known for soup dumplings that hold their broth and pan-fried varieties with real crunch.
A few other openings making the rounds this year are worth knowing even without a direct source to link: Din Tai Fung has confirmed new locations at Irvine Spectrum Center and Brea Mall, and Levain Bakery, the New York City institution known for its oversized cookies, is opening its first Orange County location at Fashion Island. Neither has a firm opening date locked in yet, so they're worth checking on before you build a whole outing around them, but both are coming.
What September Actually Looks Like
Here's the part that generic summer roundups miss because they're written in June, before anyone knows how the closings will stack. Once the OC Fair ends on August 16, the county doesn't quietly coast into fall. It loses pieces in a specific order. The Fair goes first. The Festival of Arts and Pageant of the Masters follow two weeks later on August 30. Sawdust closes the loop on September 6. After that, Laguna Canyon's arts scene goes dark until the Sawdust Winter Fantasy opens November 20, meaning there's a genuine gap of more than two months where none of these institutions are running in any form.
So the honest read on "Orange County summer 2026" isn't that it runs through Labor Day. It's that the season is already unwinding in stages, and the next eight days are the only point where the Fair, Sawdust, and at least one city's concert series are all still live simultaneously.
