Downtown Pleasant Hill's Old Orchard Supply Is About to Become a Japanese Food Hall

What fills a 42,000-square-foot former hardware store in a shopping center that has spent the past few years adding cupcakes, brunch and a taproom? In Downtown Pleasant Hill the answer is more food. Osaka Marketplace is a Japanese grocery that plans to turn the old Orchard Supply Hardware garden center into a semi-outdoor market hall lined with small restaurants.

The latest timing came out last week. After the shopping center announced a fall opening on October 19, a Downtown Pleasant Hill spokesperson told the Bay Area Telegraph to expect the market in mid-November 2026. No exact day had been set at that point. That puts the opening a few weeks out, at the start of the downtown's busiest stretch of the year.

The Old Hardware Box Is Going to a Grocery Built Around Lunch

The building is 155 Crescent Plaza, the Orchard Supply Hardware space that the City of Pleasant Hill described as vacant when it announced Osaka in October 2025. As CBS News reported, the Orchard Supply chain shut down when its parent company, Lowe's, closed every location. This storefront has been waiting for a tenant ever since.

The city's release splits the tenant into two parts. One part is a full Japanese grocery with produce, seafood, ready-to-eat meals and imported goods. The garden center, where the hardware store once sold plants and soil, becomes a semi-outdoor market hall with several mini restaurants serving sushi, ramen, chicken karaage and bento boxes. The release uses the industry term "grocerant," a grocery store and a set of small restaurants under one roof.

The October announcement adds specialty snacks and home essentials to the list. Downtown Pleasant Hill marketing director Brandi Hardy told the Bay Area Telegraph that the store would broaden the center's shopping and dining while celebrating Japanese culture and food. The company is still hiring. According to that same report, Osaka's jobs page lists openings across all positions in Pleasant Hill, with meat, fish and kitchen departments named.

It Fits a Pattern the City Has Already Named

The garden-center food hall is what turns this from a store opening into a downtown story. When the city announced Osaka, it listed the center's recent grand openings: Cantina Jack's, Paris Baguette, Crumbs Breakfast & Lunch Bar, The Royale, Morgan Territory Brewing and the Batter N' Icing cupcakery. All six serve food or drink. The release credited that run of new businesses with revitalizing the downtown. "Recent" covers a few years. Morgan Territory's Pleasant Hill taproom opened in 2023, as The Mercury News reported, and the Bay Area Telegraph reported Crumbs and The Royale open by February 2025.

Osaka also joins a Japanese dining cluster that is already in place. Haya Ramen and Mizu Sushi are both on the center's roster. The Bay Area Telegraph reported in May that Mizu had opened at 2375 Contra Costa Blvd., Suite A, near the movie theater in the former Nama K-Street Food space. It runs as an all-you-can-eat restaurant with tiered pricing. With Osaka added, the center will have a ramen counter, an all-you-can-eat sushi room and a Japanese grocery with its own sushi and ramen stalls, all within one parking lot.

Pleasant Hill Mayor Sue Noack described the deal in the city's announcement: "Osaka Marketplace shows the City's commitment to prioritizing the attraction of businesses that are local." Osaka started in the Bay Area, and Pleasant Hill will be its third store.

Pleasant Hill Gets a Bigger Store Than Foster City

The chain's other two locations are the best guide to what is coming. Osaka opened its flagship in Fremont in 2021, and The East Bay Times noted that the store is known for grab-and-go sushi deals and an indoor food court. A Foster City store followed in December 2025. Pleasant Hill comes next, and SFGATE described it as even larger than the Foster City store.

Store Address Former use Size Opening
Fremont 46881 Warm Springs Blvd. Not reported Not published Grand opening Nov. 12, 2021
Foster City 919 Edgewater Blvd. Lucky supermarket About 35,000 sq ft Grand opening Dec. 12, 2025
Pleasant Hill 155 Crescent Plaza Orchard Supply Hardware More than 42,000 sq ft Expected mid-November 2026

SFGATE reported in November 2025 that both newer stores were planned with food halls, following the Fremont model. Fremont's hall is indoors. The city's plan for Pleasant Hill puts the mini restaurants in the old garden center as a semi-outdoor space. That layout comes straight from the building, and none of the earlier stores has had one.

What Fremont Shoppers Already Know

Osaka hasn't published its Pleasant Hill hours, stall list or menu. Fremont shows how the chain runs a store day to day. Its food court is called Umeda, and Osaka described wagyu bentos, donburi and mochi donuts when it announced the store's opening. Fremont's current ordering page lists ramen, rice bowls and takoyaki, and its site posts separate hours for the cafe and the food court.

SFGATE's visit to the Fremont store adds three details about how the chain operates. None of them is a promise for Pleasant Hill.

  1. The evening markdown. During the Friday dinner rush SFGATE saw, ready-to-eat sushi and bento were 20% off. The discount has no fixed schedule but usually starts around 4 or 5 p.m.
  2. The fish supply. Kazuhiro Takeda, named as general manager in the city's release and as owner in SFGATE's reporting, told the outlet that fresh fish is flown in weekly from Tokyo's Toyosu Fish Market.
  3. The pantry and produce. SFGATE reported a selection of imported rice, soy sauce and premium wagyu beef, plus seasonal fruit such as fresh melons and strawberries.

If the evening markdown carries over, a Pleasant Hill shopper could pick up discounted ready-made dinners at the end of the workday, close to home. Takeda also spoke for the new location in the city's release: "We are thrilled to join Pleasant Hill and are looking forward to growing as a part of the community."

The Opening Lands as the Holiday Calendar Starts

The timing matters because the downtown's seasonal events start this weekend, and Osaka's expected window falls in the middle of them. Here is the current Downtown Pleasant Hill calendar:

  • Saturday, Oct. 31, noon to 2 p.m.: Trick-or-Treat Trail and the Halloween Spooktacular. Participating stores hand out treats while supplies last, including Haya Ramen, Mizu Sushi, Crescent Bistro, Jack's Restaurant & Bar, Zachary's Chicago Pizza, Morgan Territory Brewing, Batter 'n Icing, Cantina Jacks, Gotta Eatta Pita, Coco Swirl and Peet's Coffee.
  • Mid-November: Osaka Marketplace's expected opening window, with no exact day announced.
  • Saturday, Nov. 21, 6 to 8 p.m.: Light Up the Night, presented by the City of Pleasant Hill and the Downtown Merchants, with performances, crafts, caroling and a Christmas tree lighting near Chipotle.
  • Saturday, Dec. 19, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: A Merry Morning with Santa.
  • Thursday, Dec. 31, 11 a.m. to 1 p.m.: Noon Year's Eve.

If Osaka opens on schedule, Light Up the Night could be its first big evening crowd. That depends on a date the company has yet to announce. Readers who followed the summer concert series will recognize the plaza. This season it will have a new neighbor at the Crescent Plaza end.

The timeline has already moved more than once. The city's October 2025 release targeted mid-2026. That November, The East Bay Times reported a November 2026 target. The Bay Area Telegraph spotted early signage in April 2026, when the interior still needed considerable work. Mid-November is the latest word, and the next real news will be the exact opening date.

Food is also coming to Pleasant Hill beyond the plaza. The East Bay Times reported in August that the owners of Morucci's, the Walnut Creek deli, are preparing a second shop across Golf Club Road from Diablo Valley College. They're aiming for next spring, and the shop will have a separate Lever Coffee counter. More of our coverage of the town is on the Pleasant Hill neighborhood page.

After years without a tenant, the 42,000-square-foot former Orchard Supply at Crescent Plaza is expected to reopen in mid-November. If you want to know how changes at the center factor into your home's value, The Knapp Team can walk you through it. Start with a free home valuation.
