Aside from San Francisco, Oakland and Berkeley are also just a short drive from Pacifica.

History

As is the case with most of the Bay Area, Pacifica’s earliest inhabitants were Native Americans, particularly the Ohlone. Pacifica was one of the areas covered during Gaspar de Portola’s expedition in 1769. In fact, it was at Pacifica’s Sweeney Ridge that de Portola and his group discovered the rest of San Francisco Bay. Thanks to de Portola’s discovery, Alta California was rapidly colonized by the Spanish as it is the only central harbor in the whole regional coast.

Waves of immigrants followed the Spanish, including Mexicans as well as farmers from Ireland and Italy. The population grew sometime during the early 20th century, thanks to the development of the Ocean Shore Railway. Finally, in 1957, Pacifica was incorporated, making it one of the youngest cities in San Mateo County.

One of the most interesting things about Pacifica is the origin of its name. Contrary to the popular belief that the city was named after its location, Pacifica was actually inspired by a statue made by Ralph Stackpole. Eventually, it became the official name of the city after a popular vote was made in 1957.
