Walnut Creek is a vibrant city in Contra Costa County, East Bay. Tucked between Oakland and Mount Diablo, the whole city occupies a total area of approximately 20 square miles. As of 2016 estimates, Walnut Creek is home to a year-round population of approximately 64,000 residents.

History
Like most of the East Bay region, Walnut Creek was formerly home to Bay Miwok Indians. The area where Walnut Creek sits on was once composed of four Mexican land grants, one of which was called Rancho Arroyo de las Nueces y Bolbones. This was owned by Juana Sanchez de Pacheco and later passed down to her grandsons. It was from this ranch’s name that Walnut Creek derived its name, as “Arroyo de las Nueces” is Walnut Creek in Spanish.
Walnut Creek was eventually settled in 1849, sometime after the Mexican-American War. This settlement, called “The Corners,” is still found at North Main Street and Mount Diablo Boulevard. The town site was laid out, with buildings developed all over the town. More growth came in 1891, when the Southern Pacific Railroad arrived. In October 1914, Walnut Creek was incorporated as a city.
