San Ramon is a Contra Costa County city, located in the area known as San Ramon Valley in the East Bay. It is bounded by Danville up north, Brookshire to the west, Tassajara to the east, and Dougherty down south.
San Ramon is widely recognized as one of the best places to live in the East Bay for its outstanding public schools, proximity to limitless outdoor recreation, as well as the region’s top employment centers. According to the 2016 population estimates, the city is home to approximately 75,600 residents.
Covering a total area of almost 19 square miles, San Ramon is home to a couple of college campuses, a large collection of parks and open spaces, golf courses, and big companies such as Chevron, AT&T, and Accenture. The public schools in the city are managed by the San Ramon Unified School District.
Interstate 680 runs through the city, connecting San Ramon to Danville, Dublin, and Dougherty.
History
Back in the pre-Spanish colonial period, the area of San Ramon was home to a group of Seunen. The land became grazing land by Mission San Jose in the late 18th century. Eventually, in the 1830s, San Ramon was made part of Rancho San Ramon, a Mexican land grant awarded to Jose Maria Amador. The whole ranch encompassed a total of approximately 16,000 acres.
Fast forward 20 years, and San Ramon welcomes its first wave of American settlers. Among of its first residents are Leo and Mary Jane Norris, who came to San Ramon in 1850 after purchasing about 4,400 acres of land from Amador. Soon after, more settlers came. Today, the names of San Ramon’s founding members are forever immortalized as some of the hills, streets, and canyons in the area were named after them.
After undergoing a couple of name changes, the town finally settled on San Ramon in 1873. During the same year, the first post office was established in the city. The construction of Southern Pacific’s San Ramon line furthered development in San Ramon. The city was incorporated in 1983.

- City attractions – Aside from outdoor recreation spots, San Ramon is home to various attractions such as The Bridges Golf Club, San Ramon Golf Club, Crow Canyon Gardens, Forest Home Farms Historic Park, and Richard Fahey Village Park. Although the Bishop Ranch Regional Preserve is technically located outside San Ramon, it still remains one of the most popular places for recreation in the city.
