While Oakland is the county seat of Alameda, Pleasanton is where you’ll find the county’s courthouse, as well as a couple of county offices. According to the latest population estimates, Pleasanton is home to around 82,200 residents.
Aside from being the headquarters of some of the East Bay’s biggest employers, Pleasanton is also known for its outstanding quality of life. Pleasanton is also adjacent to Livermore, with Oakland and Palo Alto roughly 35 to 40 minutes away.
History
Pleasanton was established in the 1850s and incorporated in 1894. It sits on what used to be the Mexican land grants of Rancho Valle de San Jose and Rancho Santa Rita. But before Pleasanton, an earlier settlement by the name of Alisal existed in the very same area. Bandits, thieves, and desperados frequented the area, especially when the California Gold Rush began. A remnant of this community (a house built in 1844) still stands and can be found in Pleasanton’s Alviso Adobe Community Park.
Today, Pleasanton’s reputation contrasts sharply with Alisal’s. It’s recognized as one of the wealthiest middle-sized cities in the country by the U.S. Census, and is home to a highly educated population.
