Danville is an incorporated municipality located in Contra Costa County’s San Ramon Valley in the East Bay region. An affluent community covering a total area of approximately 18 square miles, the town is well-known in the valley for its weekend markets and its thriving arts and culture scene. As of 2016 population estimates, Danville is currently home to roughly 44,600 residents.
A former farming community, Danville is widely recognized as the “heart of San Ramon Valley.” The town is a mélange of upscale residential dwellings and commercial establishments, the latter of which consists of a fine collection of retail shops and dining options. There are a couple of parks and recreational spots within town limits, such as Diablo Vista Park and Sycamore Valley Regional Open Space Preserve. Towering just beside Danville is Mount Diablo and its expansive state park.
Danville is located south of Alamo and adjacent to Blackhawk. Oakland and San Francisco are about a 25 to 30-minute drive away.
History
Danville traces its origins back to when it was settled by Native Americans during the pre-Spanish colonial period. It eventually became a part of Rancho San Ramon, a Mexican land grant, and then transformed into a farming community. In 1891, Danville shifted its focus to the cultivation of fruits and nuts.
As Danville welcomed the 20th century, the community was greeted by a Spanish flu outbreak, as well as the two World Wars. Immigrants also started to pour in and progress in Danville continued thanks to the efforts of its dedicated populace.
Residential development in Danville bloomed in the late 1940s, when housing tracts were constructed. This project invited more people to relocate to Danville, which already had a reputation for being a fertile farming community. In 1982, the community was officially made an incorporated municipality.

Today, it is a local historic site that serves as Danville’s premier performing arts center. Danville is also home to the Museum of San Ramon Valley, which opened its doors in 1985. Another way to get to know local history is by visiting the Eugene O’Neill National Historic Site, also known as the Tao House.
