History

Like most of the communities in Contra Costa County, the land that Pleasant Hill sits on used to be sprawling ranchland. Its development as a community only started in the 1920s, when the land was divided into several areas for housing projects.

Pleasant Hill continued to grow post-World War 2, with several iconic structures built in the city. This includes the Century 21 Theatres, a futuristic dome theater completed in 1967. It was designed by Vincent G. Raney. Another notable landmark in Pleasant Hill is its City Hall, which won architectural design accolades after its completion.

Pleasant Hill was incorporated as a city in 1961. After its incorporation, more development projects took. Chief among these was the redevelopment of the Contra Costa and Monument Boulevards in 1991 to give way to Pleasant Hill’s Downtown district, which was only opened in 2000.
